In a joint application with UHI Millenniem Institute partners the Scottish Association for Marine Sciences (Oban) and the Centre for Mountain Studies (Perth), the ERI achieved a 'grade 4' in the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise i.e. 'Quality that equates to attainable levels of national excellence in virtually all the research activity submitted, showing some evidence of international excellence'.
