In a joint application with UHI Millenniem Institute partners the Scottish Association for Marine Sciences (Oban) and the Centre for Mountain Studies (Perth), the ERI achieved a 'grade 4' in the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise i.e. 'Quality that equates to attainable levels of national excellence in virtually all the research activity submitted, showing some evidence of international excellence'.

Environmental Sensitivity & Risk: Organism, environment and ecosystem responses to anthropogenic impacts. Staff Projects

Renewable Energy and Sustainable Design: Marine Renewables (On and Offshore wind, wave and tidal), Building Design and Small Scale Renewables for traditional and new build property. Staff Projects

Intelligent Energy: SEPIA – Sustainable Energy in Peripheral or Isolated Areas An Outline Proposal for an Integrated Action to build Sustainable Energy Communities under the “Intelligent Energy – Europe” Programme Staff Projects

The ERI actively collaborates with universities, institutes & organisations throughout the UK & Europe e.g. Universities of Stirling, Newcastle, East Anglia,Vigo (Spain), Oulo (Finland), Southampton Oceanographic Centre and the Tyndall Centre for Climatic Change.
