' Recent Changes in Acidification of Scottish Freshwaters: The Role of Forestry and Acid Deposition '
Dr. Ron Harriman

Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory, Pitlochry

Over the past 30 years, emmissions of sulpfur dioxide have declined significantly in the UK mainly due to the large decline in 'heavy' industry in the 1980's & the reduction in power station emissions in the 1990's. Consequently the deposition of acidifying sulphur compounds to upland catchments has declined considerably

A major concern has been possible delays in the recovery of freshwaters especially those with significant afforestation in their catchments.
In his talk, Dr.Harriman will summarise recent trends in acidification of Scottish freshwaters and discuss the problems of biological recovery, especially in relation to effects on salmonids.
