Experiment 8:
Air pressure.
This
experiment allows you to discover the great strength of air pressure.
Introduction:
Materials
required:
A glass
Transparent bowl / basin containing water (deeper than the glass)
Experiment:
Put
the glass into the water and turn upside down.
Lift
up the glass, but without the rim going above the surface of the water
What
happens?
The
pressure of air on the surface of the water in the bowl pushes the water up
into the glass. If the rim of the glass was raised above the surface of the
water, air should enter and push the water outside. Then the glass would empty
The
level of water in the glass rises, so that this is higher than the water outside
the glass
