Experiment 10:
The effect of salt water
This
experiment will demonstrate that all substances which have a lesser density
than the salt water will float on it
Introduction:
Materials
required:
A large glass
An egg
Table salt
A teaspoon
Water
A dessert spoon
Experiment:
Half
fill the glass with water. Then, using the dessert spoon, carefully put the
egg in the water
Take
the egg out of the water. Add 10 tablespoons of salt, and mix until it is dissolved.
Now you have made salt water
The
egg sinks to the bottom of the glass
Put
the egg in the water once more
What
happens?
What
happens?
What
happens?
The
egg floats
The
egg remains suspended in the centre of the glass
The egg is more dense than the water, and so it sinks. The salt water is more
dense than clear water, and therefore makes it possible for the egg to float.
In the last stage of the experiment, the clear water floats on the salt water
because clear water has a lesser density. So the egg stays in the middle, because
it has more density than the clear water but is less dense than the salt water.
Take
the egg out of the water again. Slowly pour more water into the glass until
it is full.
Put the egg in the water again
