Investigating home range and population structure of two wide-ranging
Scottish delphinid cetaceans: the killer whale and bottlenose dolphin

Andy Foote and Simon Ingram - University of Aberdeen

Thursday 29 March 2007

Understanding the population structure and home range is important for the management and conservation of species. Among cetaceans, delphinids pose a particular challenge as they are wide ranging and often form discrete populations that occupy the same geographic area.

This talk will present some of the techniques that are currently available for determining population structure and distributions of these cetaceans. Particular focus will be given to two studies currently underway to understand the population ecology of bottlenose dolphins and killer whales around the coast of Scotland.
