The Environmental Research Institute is located in Thurso. Thurso is a market town situated in the county of Caithness, on the North coast of the Highlands of Scotland. Thurso has a population of about 8,000 and offers a wide range of amenities. The nearest cities are Inverness (110 miles), Aberdeen (224 miles), Edinburgh (275 miles) and Glasgow ( 290 miles). Thurso is well served by road and rail links. Ferry services to Orkney, Shetland and beyond operate from the nearby Scrabster Harbour while the nearest airport is at Wick (22 miles).

The tidal stretches of the River Thurso which pass through the center of the town are good places to watch wildfowl and wading birds. tall sedge and reed beds fringe the river and salmon can often be seen jumping.
Thurso museum is open in the summer and has a collection of locally discovered fossil fish as well as a display about the famous botanist Robert Dick.
