Climate Change and Scottish Fisheries

William R. Turrell, Fisheries Research Services, Aberdeen

15 November 2007

Human induced global warming is now occurring and is affecting the fishing grounds that British fishermen exploit. The topic of the impact of climate change on fish stocks, and hence commercial fisheries, is complex and has stimulated a great deal of research worldwide. This lecture will attempt to provide a summary of the key findings to date and place them into context for the Scottish fishing industry. Some emphasis will be placed on cod, as currently changes to cod stocks in the North Sea and northwest of Scotland are of particular concern, and there are documented links between cod decline-and its potential for future recovery - with climate change.
